Rogue City: Unfinished Business

-----------------------------------

Teyon is back with a new standalone spinoff to Rogue City called Unfinished Business. The premise is RoboCop has to fight his way to the top of an OCP tower taken over by thugs. There will also be flashback scenes were you play as Alex Murphy, as seen in the trailer.

I loved Rogue City so I'm totally down for more. If there was one thing I wanted from Rogue City, it was some kind of the arcade or challenge mode. The story was great but a quite slow so it didn't have endless replay value. Unfinished Business appears to have a greater focus on action so this may be just what I was looking for. And while Rogue City was great it was far from perfect on a technical level, so the fact that this is a standalone game and not just DLC is great news to me. If they can polish up some of the rough edges from Rogue City this could be a nice step forward. And of course its inspiring to see that Rogue City did good enough to warrant a sequel or followup of any kind. Its not RoboCop vs Terminator but its just another step closer...

I like the idea of Murphy flashbacks from his days (presumably) at Metro South. Hopefully his days there were a little more successful than his transfer.

Yeah, this one looks more action based than the previous one, which is good to me when I think on replaying it. I still play Rogue City from time to time, but it could be annoying when you quit and resume it next day (or week) to find you were stuck to save a kitten or find a towel :b

I wonder when it takes place. Rogue City fits between movies, but this one feels more "futuristic" than Robo 3. Plus, the lack of Lewis on the trailer and that way too tech-y, modern building... Feels different storywise from filling the gaps between films.

But more RoboGames are fine to me!

From what I understand the Omni Tower is a massive living block that's been taken over by mercenaries. Think a scaled down Mega Block I guess.

Add into the judge and executioner line and I'm getting some nice Judge Dredd vibes.

Yeah. It remind me of 2012´s "Dredd". And one step ahead of the world of the films. Plus the Frozen feature on the Auto-9.

But it looks great and I want to take a look (and play it). Grateful for new RoboContent.

Configuring it with boards is a fun mini game in itself.

I never use full Auto though. I stick to the three round burst with the occasional single shot à la the target practice scene.

The stream description mentions "special forces equipped with jet packs or even katana-wielding foes who look more machine than man." which makes me feel like this game will continue to lead into RoboCop 3. I imagine we'll learn about the origin of Robo's prototype jetpack, even if we don't actually use it. We'll probably fight some of the robot ninjas like the one in RoboCop 3. Even though there was nothing to suggest Robo had fought anything like that before, there is nothing that says he has not either. So I think Unfinished Business will be a little side story leading into RoboCop 3. Rogue City was very detailed in establishing its place in the timeline, so I don't think they would ignore that for this game. Instead I think they will just say Lewis is off doing something else or couldn't make it inside in time, and then Robo has this self contained solo adventure. And I'd bet the ending sees the whole tower get destroyed, so there is no question of where it was during RoboCop 3. I'm thinking about the crazy approach they took to answering the question of where the Old Man went between 2 and 3, and I'd like to see them keep that same vibe going with building up to RoboCop 3.

Watched it yesterday and I thought they´re going into TV Robo. I meant, the "machine capable to control all OCP´s devices" and/or that Omnitower sounds similar to MetroNet/S.A.I.N.T more than anything in the film franchise. Of course I doubt they´d be able to incorportate any details from the shows since they have the rights to the movies, but I found it funny.

The "Don´t you remember me?" line worries me a little bit, since it seems to fall into the same New Guy In Town plot, somebody from the past (or "related" to somebody from the past) appearing again. But it´s a trailer, so we could only speculate at the moment.

For me the first thing I was reminded of was PD. Robo's enemy is his former partner, and he has a lot of flashbacks to back before he died. It's the same plot as PD, and the premise of controlling Robo is quite similar to the New Guy in Rogue City. However, while there are a lot of similarities, its a decent premise so I understand the reasoning. PD had some good ideas that fell very short, so maybe this game can offer a better take on the same story. I'd be willing to bet the bad guy turns into some kind of cyborg at the end too.

Also, I don't know if you guys noticed, but there was a press release that revealed more details that weren't shown in the trailer. One thing that stood out to me:

In addition to RoboCop and Alex Murphy, you will have the opportunity to play as Miranda and others throughout the story of Unfinished Business. These vignettes will delve deeper into the story, giving you a better understanding of how far people are willing to go for their ideals and how if RoboCop ends up coming for you, then perhaps you’ve gone too far.

I love the idea of playing as regular cop Alex Murphy, but can't say I ever wanted to play as a totally different character in a RoboCop game. So this idea seems a little weird, but I liked the storytelling in Rogue City so I look forward to seeing how they will flesh Robo's Detroit from other POVs. I also like how this tower is where the people kicked out of their homes are being sent to. They also showed an image of a ninja samurai like the one in RoboCop 3 on the Steam page, so it looks like Unfinished Business will be leading right into RoboCop 3 much like Rogue City picked up right after RoboCop 2. Overall I like most of the ideas they have shown for this game. I loved Rogue City but it was far from flawless, so I think Unfinished Business could be step up with a bit more focus and polish.

I reckon it's because those particular looks are the most iconic. I'm pretty sure that while a lot of people have seen the first film, a lot of them wouldn't have bothered with the sequels.

Oh, yeah. I just found that video on my feed and I thought it´d be cool to remake some of the old Ocean titles as they´re doing with Terminator. I meant, redo the older games in a more cool, poignant way. The first RoboCop had decent games, but Robo 2 and 3 weren´t that good. I remember NES´s RoboCop 2 where Murphy had slippery feet, or the 16 bit version of RoboCop 3 where difficulty is over the place and you can´t find the fun factor anywhere.

I guess Robo 3 would be the best choice for a "remake", since RoboCop 2 had a fun arcade adaptation, but since most of the people like to hate on the third one I think they´d go for the second film.

Anyway, new RoboStuff is always good for me!

No Fate looks really good, I will definitely be picking it up when it comes out. Of course, when I first saw the trailer my first thought was how cool it would be to see RoboCop get the same treatment. Rogue City got. decent reviews and seemed to sell well enough to put out Unfinished Business at least, and I imagine a 2D sidescroller is a bit easier to pull off. Weller is onboard to give his likeness which is a big selling point of No Fate, so all the pieces are there... for RoboCop vs Terminator! Its cool to see multiple new RoboCop games AND multiple new Terminator games coming out in recent years, but one of these developers needs to stop messing around and give us what we really need!

Badass trailer, but the whole time I was thinking about how the dude called it "a standalone expenstion" like with an 'e' instead of an 'a' in the word "expansion"... maybe its just me. Anyway, I notice that this trailer gives us a good look at the robot ninjas and the playable ED-209 section. I expected to see the RoboCop 3 gunarm in this game but at this point if they haven't even hinted at it I'm guessing it won't be in the game. There is even a new minigun shown off, and all the focus seems to be on the cryo cannon. Not a big deal, and I could still be proven wrong, but with all the attention to detail and references to the movies I was definitely hoping to see the gunarm, and maybe the flightpack too.

I'd love a chance to use it, especially if you get a tasty animation of Robo removing his arm and attaching it. Hell, even the Titus "effort" managed that, even if it wasn't the same Gunarm.

I can't imagine it'll happen though. I think even though Rogue City and Unfinished Business bridge the gap between 2 and 3, it definitely leans way more towards 1 and 2 than it does 3. Still, we've got the Otomo prototype in the trailer, and the trophy/achievement list has revealed some interesting tidbits.

At this point I'd settle for a nice Easter egg. The story synopsis mentions the mercenaries get a hold of Robo's chair and manage to access OCP systems through it, and thus take over the OmniTower, so maybe we'll see some other tech, say, oh I don't know, a Flight Pack or Gunarm perhaps?

I'd even take a cameo on a computer screen. Miranda seems to know a lot about Robo and has an allegedly shady past...

Since Robo 3 just puts the gunarm without any explanation at the begining of the film, I think this game could include it at some point, since the whole "Rogue City" aspect serves as a bridge between sequels. And, if Teyon put it in there, it´s clever to avoid showing it in promotional materials and give the player a surprise when it happens.

To me it´s more possible to have then putting the gunarm over the jetpack. I guess, since it´s a first person shooter, they could do it "easily", but can´t figure out how they could make it work over levels that are designed for walking on their floors.

What I imagined for the jetpack was more of an on-rails section, like when you operate a turret on the back of a vehicle controlled by AI. The path is predetermined but you can aim as you fly over the city. But this idea seemed less and less likely as we saw more of what this game is about. With the single tower location, it wouldn't make much sense, but maybe once you get to the top you find the jetpack and have to fly away.

I don't think there is much chance of seeing the jetpack though. In the movie they even mention it is just a prototype. But Robo was using the gunarm from the start of 3 so it would make a lot more sense to see the gunarm. There's always a possibility that they are going to save that for another game, and keep the Rogue City series going with another game set between the movies.

I'd like that. I know the majority of people deride the third entry, but I've warmed to it over the last few years. It was a bit of a shame Rogue City didn't go into the third a bit more, other than a quick Media Break segment at the end with a report on the Kanemitsu Corporation's takeover of OCP.

That's not a bad shout. The only other way I can see it is you get it for one section, as they did with the Cobra Cannon in Rouge CIty, where you stomp forward obliterating everything in your path, with the righteous fury of a cyborg with unfinished business.

When I was a kid I watched RoboCop 3 so many times its probably still the RoboCop movie I've seen the most. It holds a special place in my heart, which is why I was so glad Rogue City at least acknowledged 3 instead of totally ignoring it. I saw a lot of people say "Rogue City is the true RoboCop 3" but its not even trying to be that, it sits neatly between the two films. Its more interested in trying up loose ends from the first two movies, but it was a game that respected the timeline of the entire trilogy. I'm looking forward to fighting some Otomo prototypes and seeing how they fit into the story.

I've got a couple hours in and feeling about the same. Its the same as the first game but feels slightly more polished in some areas. Robo's voice is a lot more metallic, and Weller's voice sounds a bit deeper. The faces seem to be touched up too which is a welcome improvement. And the combat is a lot more challenging already, with dudes coming at you from every angle and some new enemy types that can be tough to take down.

I am also enjoying the new music for combat. So far I have heard a couple tracks that might not be from the movies, but defintely fit the vibe and fill in the experience. Rogue City was carefully carved into the framework of the trilogy of films. It seemed like every location was ripped right out of the movies. With Unfinished Business we are seeing them stretch their legs a bit and try some new things that aren't direct references to scenes from the movies. So far I am really enjoying that. And I have not even got to any of the parts where you play as Murphy or ED-209.

Hola, you party animals.

I finished it a couple of couple of hours ago.

In short, if you enjoyed Rogue City then you'll enjoy Unfinished Business just as much.

As I mentioned before, there's less fluff, although there's still a bit there. There's a few goofy side quests but there's a humour about a few of them that's firmly tongue in cheek. Weller's delivery is spot on, and managed to elicit a giggle out of me. There's also some decent story beats touching on Murphy's past and the RoboCop programme. Don't get me wrong, it's a little B Movie, as Rogue City was, but there we're a few parts mentioning Murphy's former life that added a serious tone. They slowed the pace in a good way. There are a couple of references to RoboCop 3, although I would have liked some more.

Gameplay wise, it's the same apart from a few new enemies and environmental takedowns. You see these enemies in the trailers, but I won't go into them too much as to not ruin it for those yet to play it. The skill tree is the same, although you start with two points in each category, so you can pull those tasty trick shots and all that from the get go. It does feel like you earn experience points quicker this time around.

The sounds are largely the same, although some of the music is very reminiscent of RoboCop and RoboCop 3, yet are original tracks. There's also some music that feels very Dredd, which given the scent of OmniTower, feels appropriate.

I am however disappointed with the lack of New Game Plus which was patched into Rogue City. It's a strange omission as you'd think Teyon would have implemented it seeing as it was a player requested feature originally. Fingers crossed they do the same. I want my power fantasy!

So yeah, I'd recommend it. But then again, I would say yet. Oh, and Archive. If you're reading this, you may or may not get to rescue another cat. :robo1:

Right now I have only played about half of the game.
Playing it in short sessions so it doesn't become too repetitive and so far it very much feels like a DLC rather than an actual separate game. It's more of the same.
Some chaotic shootouts mixed with incredibly mundane side-quests which has Robo meet hideous NPCs and go on fetch quests from A to B and back to A.
( Still it's not as bad as in Rogue City where a side mission is getting someone a towel.... )

The story is nothing special as of yet, but has become a bit more interesting after the (much too short) Alex Murphy level. Playing as Murphy is a nice touch although as we're in first person it doesn't quite pack the same punch.

Haven't rescued any cats yet, but did have an opportunity to pet one. Nice!

I completed it and enjoyed it. My thoughts are pretty much the same as for Rogue City, as a RoboCop fan I loved it but as a gamer it still has some rough edges that hold it back from perfection. On the positive side, the combat feels a lot better in UB. There are way more enemies, armored enemies are much more common, and the enemy placement is what really makes it shine, with countless guys attacking you from every angle. The Cyro canon was more fun that I expected, and I loved the way it was incorporated into the story. The story itself was a bit better, as Graves was a much better villain than Wendell. I loved the brief moment you play as Alex Murphy, a great way to set up Graves as the villain. And the ED-209 part was sheer joy, a RoboCop experience I didn't know I needed until I got it. The gameplay of the ED-209 was surprisingly good, much better than many similar slapped on mech sections, like the recently released Doom: the Dark Ages which came to mind while playing it. The ED-209 section was short but oh so sweet. I would have loved another section or two with Murphy and ED-209, but for a glorified DLC just having these moments here really helped it stand out.

Unfinished Business feels like it improved some aspects of the original game, but a couple choices felt like a step backwards or just didn't work for me. The Otomo prototypes were rather disappointing to me. They looked cool and they were a great addition to set up RoboCop 3, but they are so weak that they posed no threat at all. I cut through them like butter while basic enemies shooting at me from behind the prototypes were much more threatening. I think this is just a balancing issue, and I think they need to patch the prototpyes to have much more health and do more damage with their attacks so they feel more relevant. That was my biggest complaint, though not having NG+ at launch is rather disappointing too. I also found the ending to be underwhelming. The ED-209 section is the true climax of the game, but. the last couple sections felt a bit rushed and lacking in excitement. The story just kind of ends exactly as you'd expect, quite abruptly, and doesn't stop to set up RoboCop 3 or anything like that. Rogue City took some time to cap off some characters stories and show the result of some of your choices. I was hoping for more RoboCop 3 love, and while the Otomo prototypes and the jetpack enemies were cool touches, they didn't add as much to the experience as I would have hoped.

Overall though, Unfinished Business was great and well worth the price. Rogue City went deeper into the lore and had a lot more references and connections to the movie. But I think I had more fun with Unfinished Business as a game. The increased focus on action kept it from dragging as Rogue City sometimes did, which will make Unfinished Business more replayable in the long run. When Rogue City was announced out of nowhere it felt like a dream come true, and Unfinished Business is the icing on the cake.

Why, Rick, that is wonderful! You should pitch that to the devs, they'll thank you so much!

there was even a RoboFan (not '93 though)

Shoot! There go my chances for fame and fortune!

Glad to hear that it's mostly a good experience. I'm looking forward to potentially playing it some day (the main game was a bit too taxing on my laptop, so I haven't really played much of it, but looking forward to a playthrough in the future).

So that "morning routine" mission...
Playing not as Robo but a female character getting ready in the morning, going around her apartment and feeding her cat. What?

She is also voiced by the same woman that does ALL the female voices in the game. I guess Weller took all the voice money.

going around her apartment and feeding her cat. What?

Why do you hate cats?

All joking aside, I think it’s the whole character development thing. My interpretation is that after what happened to her, she’s become a bit of a recluse, being that she no longer works for OCP.

I think it was an attempt to show that even the most mundane and ordinary tasks seem to be a bit harder for Miranda these days, as she seemed to have to talk her way through them, almost like a mental checklist.

The problem is that, being a bit of a B Movie script with C Movie acting, it doesn't work quite as well as it should. I appreciated a glimpse into her character, the RoboCop programme, and her motivations.

I wish there were more Murphy missions though, as they were a nice change of pace. I think if it were one mission but spread into three or so sections ,I may have got my fill, as basic as it was.

I gotta say, I thought it was interesting how Unfinished Business introduced a new character who is integral to the story, had a hand in Robo's creation, and is even playable in this new RoboCop game. They are also a person of color, and more diversity is always great.

A shame, then, that this new diverse character is such a pain in the ass. The section where you have to play as her was tedious, and killed the momentum the game had built up at that point. The other part where you play as a backcrossing mercenary wasn't much better, to be fair, but I did enjoy how it showed Robo's entrance into the building from a different POV.

Miranda's quest, on the other hand, puts you in the shoes of a idiot who can't do more than run away. I wasn't trying to be a hater, but this is a RoboCop game that puts you in the shoes of a character who is trying to exploit/destroy RoboCop. So obviously I'm not gonna be rooting for the lady who signs on board to work with a murderer to capture RoboCop. I'm a RoboCop fan, not a Miranda fan.

At the end of the day, its like 15 minutes of boredom at the worst. That part of the game does explain a lot of the plot and how everything came together. There are elements of it that work. But man, it really is a shame they only gave us a small slice of Murphy and a whole lot of Miranda. She's totally lame and the best part of her character is how Robo continually clowns on her when she begs to team up. Robo saw through her bullshit right away, and so did we.

There's no other way to say this: Unfinished Business pulled a Spider-Man 2 on us.

It has some VERY uneven levels. The parts where you don't play as Robo are the worst and a bore to get through, while the Murphy and ED-209 parts were great.

Overall it feels like they were either rushed or just uninspired when they made the game. The side quests are extremely basic. One mission towards the end has Robo helping a guy open a gate that is behind him. Go to the gate and press X. Mission over.

The whole running around looking for door access codes, which is basically the whole game, is absolutely stone age game design.

Much like Rogue City the game doesn't have a real fight with the bad guy. It is played out in a cutscene. And while Rogue city had a proper ending, with an epilogue, here the game just ends. No info what happened to the police Precinct, Lewis and Reed.

I give it some extra points for being a RoboCop game but overall it's a shaky 3 out of 5.
