Not too late. Blomkamp can do a sequel
But I'm getting a bit concerned for Elysium. 55% currently on Rottentomatoes. Critics doesn't seem overly excited. The political message might be a bit too "in your face" this time around. Some might also think it's a bit too close to D9 in style but D9 was kinda awesome so don't see how that's a problem.
I think Elysium needs a 45-50M opening at least or it's gonna be very hard to motivate anything but PG-13 for Robocop 2014.
Worst case scenario Elysium flops. Then I think we can say goodbye to 100M+ R-rated movies for some time. Dredd 3Ds fiasco last year was easier for the studios to swallow since it only had a 50M budget and a bit shady marketing. Elysium has had a ton of tv-spots and featurettes. It has to do good or there might not be a market for gritty sci-fi.
