He didn't say he was done with the role, he wanted to do or was already in contract to make Naked Lunch and the studio weren't willing to wait so they re-cast the role. Given the troubles at Orion that we now know of we can see why they were eager to get the film out quickly. They were probably also glad they wouldn't have had to pay Weller's high fee, less money spent is more money in their account to help kep the company afloat.
