My other half said Elle, a prequel to the Legally Blonde series, while taking away from the original film by not leaving Elle where she was at the beginning of said film, was a decent prequel.

She said it remained faithful in spirit and tone and was cast well enough wherein you could believe these characters were younger incarnations. So yeah, I was slightly hopeful that maybe they'll do RoboCop right. After all, everyone who is involved with Robo in some form these days is a massive fan who loves the original, right?

Then I read the rumours about Marc Kyle and Robo being a tutor. Honestly, it's a wonder I don't self harm.

So Dan is playing Alex Murphy and eventually RoboCop... so what about this other character that is supposed to be the focus who also becomes a robo-cop and that Murphy mentors, or has that been done away with? Hopefully it has as it sounded like a stupid idea.

From the, admittedly brief, synopsis it sounds like it's going to be a retelling rather than a reboot or sequel.

I'm alright with that, but then again I don't have high hopes. Life is easier this way.

I don´t know. At this point we went from super-soldier robotic and an old Murphy as a mentor to this new synopsis that tells nothing, so I don´t know what to think. I assume it´ll be a retelling, as you say, because studios think audiences are dumb enough and you have to tell the origins over and over again in case you don´t get it. Plus, a retelling give them the opportunity to mess with the suit because, of course, they need to change it.

Yeah. Yesterday on some chat I was saying that back then I´d be really excited for a new content, knowing at least it´d be a continuation and some elements like the suit would be back again. Right now, not too much. I´d like to be kind of optimistic and try to give an aseptic look to the whole project, but we were tricked way too often to be happy for a new content.

I feel like if they get the suit wrong, it's gonna turn off a lot of people right away. The same thing happened with the 2014 reboot. The revamped suit looked alright, not great but I could have lived with it... but then they made it all black and it looked like shit. If they aren't reusing the original design, my interest in watching will drop sharply. The problem with the 2014 version was that it looked too generic and with the boring colour, you'd have been forgiven for thinking it was Batman or a black coloured Iron Man outfit. The suit itself is an iconic part of the overall character, changing it means you might as well call the show something else.

The thing with RoboCop is that they´re always trying to reimagine the whole thing. And that means making the character more agile, like he could jump like Super Mario in the reboot, and be more efficient that anybody in the world. So, of course, they´ll need to redo his origins and, of course, change the suit in the process.

For me, I can´t see any trouble with the original suit. But I can see some things that they could improve: the hands. With today´s HD Robo´s hands always look "rubbery" (well, because they weren´t made with solid materials) and you can spot scratches and some other stretching marks on them. With todays technology they could make the hands look metallic with several tricks, from 3D modelled pieces to some CGI tweaking to changing the gloves in case there´s a close up instead of a general view of him, etc... That´s something that have room to be improved. As for the suit itself, can´t see what they could improve. The Reboot did a "version" of the original, but I didn´t see it as an improvement over the original: the 1987 have an overall cool design, and the legs looked complex and full of details. The RebootLegs are boring, dull, and doesn´t have anything interesting on it. The fake ABS midsection didn´t impress me. What I think it looked "cute" is the fact they could "cut" some of the actor´s physics to make the illusion he has small joints between body and limbs and such. But I think the overall opinion of the audience is "beh".

And the need to redo the original... Man, I miss the 90s and 2000s. You didn´t need to redo everything, you keep going with the character and his story. I meant, the 1988 Marvel Cartoon and the 1994 live action series were creative enough to do an opening where you get the basics of his story in over a minute. Cop gets killed in the line of duty, you put the faces of the characters between, like Lewis/Madigan, the chairman, the scientifics, etc, and end telling that this cop is now a cyborg. I´m afraid this 8 episode series could give us a slow introduction of Alex Murphy as a man, his family, his relationships on the force, and then in the middle he´s RoboCop. And I don´t want it. As much as I love the character, I don´t need to spend hours knowing him as a human. I don´t care. I don´t think is neccesary: I know he´s a good guy who didn´t have luck in his life. I don´t need to see his credentials or cases in human form. I want the cyborg. I think it´s ok to spice the series with some flashbacks if there´s a need for it, like PD did back in the day, but after all these years of diluted, watered down projects, cancelled movies and mediocre comics I´d love to spend time with Robo instead of his human self. Let the cyborg show us some humanity with his grief with his memories, and let´s move on with the story.

I´m also worried that they could redo the film in 8 episodes. I mean, it could be a "logical" step for a supposed "season 1": you have to tell the whole origins, so you could spend each chapter to kill Murphy, and then go after the baddies one by one, until he catches (and finishes) Clarence (or whoever he´ll be this time).

Man, how cool it´d be to get the first chapter with the cyborg doing his work without having to spend time with a fan-fiction redo of the original tragic backstory. Sad

Based on how similar sci-fi or superhero TV shows go these days, I doubt we will actually see Murphy become RoboCop until the final episode of the first season. Kind of like Daredevil. Or Arrow with its multiple seasons of flashbacks. It seems these shows think the origin is the most important part of the story, when the original RoboCop gave us like 10 minutes of Murphy before he died. It's also a cheeky way to save money on the suit or CGI. So I am expecting like half the first season to be pure set up following Murphy as a cop. Then he will die later in the season, only to be brought back as RoboCop at the very end. Then my guess for a second season would be the plot of the first movie with him solving his murder and tracking down the killers. I definitely think they are going to do whatever they can to keep the suit to a minimum and prioritize the human Murphy as much as possible, even if its just to save money.

That said, I am cautiously optimistic about this project. The first few Amazon original shows were quite bad, but they have come a long way since then. Shows like the Boys show they can give a pop culture adaption the time and money it needs to work. This casting certainly isn't confirmation that the show is definitely happening, anything could change between now and when they start shooting. But its a step in the right direction, and at least seems more plausible then some previous announcements. I'm not jumping up and down with excitement, but I am happy things seem to be moving foward.

Richard Eden has posted a photo of himself at the 1987 RoboCop cast group photo. He said he'd love to join Dan Stevens and Peter Weller on the new show. Did he just accidentally reveal Weller is going to be in it in some form? Laughing
