An MGM spokesman told us the project is still on track - though not for a 2010 release, as reports initially suggested. The rep said that the studio had told distributors at an event a couple weeks ago to expect the movie in 2011. He said director Darren Aronofsky (The Wrestler, The Fountain) and screenwriter David Self (Road to Perdition) were still working on the script, and that no casting had been completed.
The announcement of a new Robocop comics title this week only reinforced our curiosity about the status of the upcoming movie reboot, about which we've heard nothing in recent months. So we called MGM and got the 411.
The new Dynamite Comics Robocop title announced this week is only the latest of many Robocomics, so Robologists shouldn't pore over its pages expecting details about the plot of Aronofsky's movie, the MGM spokesman said, though he added that he wouldn't be surprised to see another comic tie-in once the movie is released. He didn't have anything else to add about the movie, only that "Darren and David are working on it now, and we look forward to seeing it in 2011." And so do we.

2011 - Well, that doesn't surprise me. But 2010 had a nicer ring to it. Bah.
It's still worth waiting for. Or at least it's still worth waiting until we get some more details.
Thanks for the news, 38. _________________

Thanks for the information!
I only expect the film to be extra special now that they will have longer working on the script - all good things come to those who wait!
I like the term "robologists"!! _________________

I'm actually relived that they changed the release year. I do NOT want them to rush this thing.
( Even better is that Robo no longer will compete with Ironman2's 2010 release. )

Lots of news coming out today about this new movie getting produced before Robocop:
http://www.comingsoon.net/news/movienews.php?id=56307

Darren Aronofsky's "Black Swan" could soon be taking flight.
After being set up in early 2007 at Universal, the project -- a supernatural thriller set in the world of New York City ballet -- has been reconstituted after being put into turnaround by the studio. It has been making the rounds to studios and specialty divisions, several of which are keenly interested.
Among the elements giving it a boost: Natalie Portman is attached to play the lead.
Several other changes have occurred since the Aronofsky-helmed project was first developed by Universal.
Mark Heyman, a development exec at Aronofsky's Protozoa Pictures, has done a rewrite of John McLaughlin's original script for the pic, which Mike Medavoy's Phoenix Pictures and Protozoa are producing.
Aronofsky, meanwhile, has gone on to helm the critical and commercial favorite "The Wrestler," putting him in high demand.
CAA packaged and is selling "Swan"; it also reps Portman and Aronofsky.
"Swan" centers on a veteran ballerina (Portman) who finds herself locked in a competitive situation with a rival dancer, with the stakes and twists increasing as the dancers approach a big performance. But it's unclear whether the rival is a supernatural apparition or if the protagonist is simply having delusions.
Those who've read the script say it's a spine-tingler with elements of "The Others," the Nicole Kidman breakout in which viewers are left to discern what's real and what's imagined.
If a sale happens imminently, "Swan" could begin shooting as early as this year. Aronofsky has not committed to a movie that's ready to go, though he has been developing the "Robocop" reboot at MGM.

And watch, it's gonna get delayed again, this time till 2012, maybe with WB instead of MGM. Who knows!? Maybe WB will buy out MGM, and we all know that in this crazy world anything can happen in a heartbeat.
But I will be surprised if it does come out in 2011 and it kicks ass...

Natalie Portman in a tutu...I can dig it.
As for RoboCop being delayed, cool. They need more time to decide where the hell they are gonna go with this thing, so the delay Is actually good news.
MGM does in no way need another flop or under-performing film,(Those are technically two different things) so hopefully with this extra time to "think it over" they will come up with a solid story to base the film around rather than a rushed product to throw out there to meet a release date. _________________
