"It was rumoured a while ago and now it is official. He will play Norton, the scientist who invents the cyborg technology that brings Officer Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman) back to life. Norton will have to deal with the morality of saving Murphy's life and the demands of the company that he works for."
Oldman was recently nominated for an Academy Award for his leading role in Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy and can be seen back on the big screen this summer in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises.
RoboCop is set for release on August 9, 2013.

I like this casting! Its giving some validity that the movie might actually be good. NOw having said that it doesnt mean i have forgotten about the fact that they are totally destroying the BEAUTIFUL Rob Bottin design and turning it into some monstrosity! The way i see it and can validate seeing this movie is...I still have the REAL Robocop on blueray and can watch it and remember it at any time. This "Robocop" will just be something different. But lets be honest no one has seen anything yet, as far as the robosuit goes so maybe that was just a smoke screen to create more buzz amonst us ROBO-Nerds. We shall see...only time will tell. Untill then im marking Oldmans casting as a win!

I wish they'd just call it a reboot rather than a remake.

I think they should use the same character he played in Hannibal. Maybe that's what the new robo will look like.

I did not know that role was played by Oldman.
Then again I only watched a bit of Hannibal when I was younger and did not truly appreciate that kind of film at the time.

Cool!
I haven't noticed that too. When i saw Hannibal, i just loved and hated it. Loved because Clarice was kind of atractive, and the beautiful photography (not talking about those gory ones), the tense and addictive action, the dark but kind-of "chic" soundtrack by Hanz Zimmer. Everything looked real and dense, another competent filme direction by Ridley Scott. I hated, tought, because the movie made me feel bad. A kind of mix reaction about the main character, admiration, but disgust too.
Enough off-topic, i really like Oldman part in Batman series. He's character is truly well done. I think he can add something to RoboCop too.

This goes hand in hand with the common Hollywood strategy of introducing a up and coming unknown in the main role and letting a older well known actor play a supporting role as a mentor or rolemodel. The death of the mentor then leads into a bigger motivation for the main character.

Ed Neumeier had this to say about casting Gary Oldman.
Ed Neumeier : | I think Jose Padilha is a very talented guy & he will make the best movie he can. It's going to be global product & MGM, etc., have committed considerable funds to accomplish this. Who in my position could not be pleased? It's like watching your kid get a big job. As to Mr. Oldman, well, that's the kind of luck a director can't get enough of (imho) & it bodes well that Mr. Padilha can attract talent of Oldman's caliber! |

Oldman has become one of the new go to elders when it comes too these "hollywood" productions,Almost the way Gene Hackman was for years before,And numerous other's..Now to be clear I like Gary Oldman but it not as though his involvement guarantee's a great flick,He's been invovled with his fair share of dud's.My biggest problem is the seemingly uninspired character he's been cast too play,"Norton" seems to be an amalgim of several charcters attached too Robo..And just really reeks of lazy writing. Now I could be 100 percent wrong to cause as of late so much goofy info has been leaked on this project that I've really had to stop and consider that much of it could be deliberate misinformation..Possible.

A couple of years ago i red the same text on an other site by neumeier, except about gary oldman. This was during the Darren Aronofsky days.
I wonder how much Neumeier will earn if this movie becomes a boxoffice hit.
(percentage wise) I think he must say he's positive because he will see dollar marks in his eyes.

Again I have some more news share about this film:
The Fringe: Kinnaman Talks RoboCop Remake
The Fringe is a place where non-horror genre films can get some play on Shock. These films might be sci-fi, fantasy or action - and certainly contain some horror elements - but will likely be light on scares, or, straight-up "horror." Still, they might be of interest to you.
Joel Kinnaman (The Killing) did some talking about the RoboCop remake. If you haven't heard, he's the new Alex Murphy and he'll be slipping into that character's skin for director Jose Padilha this September when shooting begins.
The actor spoke to Collider and had this to say about the director's vision: "José has a completely different take on this than Verhoeven had, and with all respect, everybody that’s involved in this movie loved the original and we have a lot of respect for it. We’re going to have a lot of throwbacks and there’s going to be a lot of fun stuff for the fans of the first movie. It’s a new story within the old one."
Gary Oldman will play opposite Kinnaman as RoboCop's creator. Kinnaman revealed the story is, "very much a relationship between Gary Oldman’s character and Alex Murphy." We posited earlier that the casting of someone like Oldman as RoboCop's creator would take the story in a new direction (you don't waste an actor like that on a background role) and that appears to be true.
More on the redo as it comes in!
