Oh is that what this is? I thought this was an Iron Man fan board...
I too have been a have been a huge fan as long as I can remember. We owned all the toys, watched the cartoon, read the comics, first saw the movie when it came out on vhs in '88, etc. I personally can separate this into its own thing. I agree the suit could use some work, but I think for the tone and style of this particular adaptation it works. Affer all, this isnt meant to replace the original, its meant to stand on its own.
Not everyone will like it. Not everyone can separate it from the original. Some may not be happy unless its Weller in the old suit again. Point is, you cant please everyone. Im just hoping it will be a good story that entertains in its own right without leaning on the original. Those who are already denouncing it, I feel, are putting the horse before the carriage . Until its out and we can see it in context we really cant be sure how it will turn out. Anything else is strictly heartfelt opinion, which is perfectly fine. Its just a bit premature.
Curiously enough, notice how they havent filmed with the suit since the first weekend? Maybe the studio took note of the P.R. fiasco it caused and decided to tweak it before they waisted any more time with it. _________________

RoboPimp : | And the fact that people love all these inaccurate interpretations just shows the potential for the Robocop remakes success. For example, I thought Nolan's Batman movies were really shitty and just a terrible job of adapting the source material, and less comic-accurate than even Batman & Robin. Yet I'm constantly told I don't understand Batman BY PEOPLE THAT HAVE NEVER READ COMICS. So, if the Robocop film turns out to be halfway decent there is gonna be a brand new fanbase sprouting up who has never seen or perhaps even heard of the original. Show them the original and they'll probably think it's stupid and outdated, and I don't doubt there are gonna be plenty of people who like the new design better (people who never saw the original beforehand).
If people like CrimeDoesNotPay can like reinterpretations better than the source material, the same will happen for Robocop. As much as I would like everyone to like the 'right' version of the character better, it's just not gonna happen. Before reading his take on the Dredd thing I hadn't even thought about this potential, but now I realize that no matter what there is going to always be a group of people who like the other version of something. Some people think Spiderman 2 is amazing and Spiderman 3 sucks. I think quite the opposite. Just like I'll probably think the new Robocop is shitty, yet if I go see it with people that never saw the original they'll probably tell me I'm wrong. It's hard to avoid making comparisons, but if you can that you'll enjoy it a lot better. When i first saw the original Judge Dredd I wasn't too familiar with the character and rather liked the film. Fast forward a few year and Dredd is one of my favorite comic book characters ever and it's hard for me to watch that film.
Therefore, to enjoy the new Robocop film I am going to have to view it as though I had never heard of the character, that I haven's loved him since I was 3 years old, and toss everything I know and cherish out the window for a couple hours if I have any hope of actually liking the new film. It will be hard to walk in the theater with one of my Robocop shirts on and pretend I have no idea what to expect, but that's the only hope I have at this point. Otherwise I'll probably wind up throwing soda at the screen and getting kicked out of the theatre.
By being able to separate the two products I am still optimistic for this film, yet the lifelong Robocop fan in me thinks it all sucks. I'd be happy with an end product somewhere in the middle. |
RoboPimp, you make some spot-on, excellent points my friend. Very well put. I find myself in both camps, as it were. On one hand, I saw Robocop at a very impressionable tima and age in my life. It captivated me, and it still does to this day. It's just such an original concept that was executed in a really incredible way. To even consider a remake is unthinkable. It's almost an insult. It's like remaking the original Star Wars. It's a cinematic masterpiece that should be left alone.
Then there's this other side of me that can appreciate an update that would take advantage of modern movie-making techniques and special effects. Such a cool and original concept deserves a proper remake. So I guess I'm kinda torn. I'm a little upset that they're re-imagining a movie that has been so ingrained in my consciousness over the years and made such an impression on me as a young teen. But I'm also intrigued by the thoughts of seeing a new take on it...it will be very interesting to see the new movie and compare it to the original. But I think the reception of it, like you said RoboPimp, will be a generational thing; kids and young people will probably love it and find the original odd and dated, while the rest of us that grew up with it and absorbed it for the last twenty-five years will be looking at it from the opposite mentality...we revere the original and will endlessly and hopelessly compare it to the new film.
I'm looking forward to it with an open mind, but it's so hard to think about seeing the new movie while suppressing memories of the original. It may be impossible for me to do so.

I don't like the suit at all, in fact I hate it. It's an Ironman/Batman ripoff, and out of fear of what garbage the movie might be, I will simply stick to my director's edition Robocop trilogy.
They should have simply just made a new Robocop film using the source material...

Guys, it is sad to see that many of you are passively accepting this abomination of a remake. It does not have to be Weller (and shouldn't be because he was a 2nd rate actor when he did the film) but it needs to be Robocop - not Ironman wannabe. I mean if they kep the original ED209, then why not stick to original Robo. To capitulate to this bastardization is just pathetic. Don't given them your money until they show that they have earned it!

Well there are many who for them robocop is just a passing thing,we've seen it here on the archive for years..I mean I've giving this alot of thought ,and I've come to the conclusion that most of these members who are championing this new flick will probably move on to other subject matter after this film releases and get it's final reaction whether that be good or more likely bad..Most fans of anything don't appreciate your thing "what ever that may be?" fully bastardized too the point where its barely recognizeable,Again I'll use Superman as an example "lets do Superman without his cape" when this word leaked during Tim Burtons failed wierdass Superman the fan community of that property freaked the fuck out between that and Nick Cage as the man of steel fan reaction prompted warner brothers to end that crazed production very early on..
This is a simular deal but times have changed their not gonna stop production on this bastard of a flick because they don't have the money too start over te economy is bad and production houses feel the pinch now when they did'nt as much back then "Enemy Mine actually exsists as to completely different films the one we know now and the one that was in the can before they realized it did'nt work and made the whole f'n movie over,Look it up it's fact"...
Anyways back to my case and point NO REAL ROBOCOP FAN WILL ACCEPT THIS AS ROBOCOP,I can't see how a Robofan could even begin too rationalize this thing as Robocop becuase its not it's simple..Some people just like too sh*T on what came before because CG is so friggin fantastic and Robo's stop motion ED and Cain looks dated or the Suit was'nt sleek enough or Technology has changed so Robo should to,I say Bullshit too all these arguements,I mean come on people these for the most part are the same people responsible for the Total Recall remake and wtf can you say about that big smoldering turd in its defense?..I mean really?..unoriginal,uninspired,blatant coporate cash grab, hastily made shitty sony movie...Nuff said..Now Jose supporters again lets here how great this is and how everyone's wrong and how great this is gonna be because elite squad 1 and 2 were the greatest things you've ever watched..I'm waitng.

True Weller was not a renowned actor at the time (although he had played in several other movies) but i think that we have yet to see someone play Robocop and move the way he did....
