Fred seems to still be trying to appeal to the masses with some kind of politically correct action-hero Robocop. You won't bring fans in with that.
It's hard to do a sequel for a larger than life character because you have to keep creating larger than life villains. This is easier to do in scifi movies because you can create a race of aliens or giant robots to terrorize the people and then the hero kicks butt. However, Robocop is set in the realistic future, so those options are out. Robocop 2 and 3 tried to create more sophisticated robot villains. I like the way that the Robocop remake used a mob army as the villains because that is reality. If I were to create a Robocop sequel, I would try to do something similar but perhaps play with the idea of automation. For example, we have smart machines nowadays like drones (and similarly, the robot warriors in the remake). Perhaps the theme of the new movie could be "do we need a machine that is also a man?"
That would be a bit more thought-provoking than Robocop just gunning down another big robot bad guy.

At the risk of "necroposting" here, I wanted to chip in on this...

Instead of blaming R3 for "killing his career", how about he start at the beginning again and try to do something to revive it? I know: easier said than done, especially with Hollywood and how reputation can make or break you. But blaming something else doesn't fix a thing and just makes you look like a kid who got into trouble for breaking a window.

Frankly, he never blamed anyone but himself for the failure of the film. I don't think he ever pointed fingers at anyone.
